Since 2012, John has served as Assistant Director of the extensive archaeological dig site of Gebel el-Silsila. John is a familiar face in the world of media, having recently appeared with Maria on National Geographic’s “Egypt’s Treasure Guardians” as well as the Travel Channel’s “Expedition Unknown” & the Science Channel’s January 11, 2021. John Ward and Dr Maria Nilsson will share their recent archaeological discoveries and research results from their last field seasons, summarising the excavations of Tutankhamun’s workers village, Amenhotep III’s stone workshop , the New Kingdom necropolis and much more.
The Thutmoside cemetery is located in the northern part of Gebel el-Silsila East, with seventy-three burials discovered so far, thirty-three of which are in rock-cut chamber tombs (see map opposite, top). There, experts Maria Nilsson and John Ward have been going underground in an area that used to be a hive of industry. Over 3,000 years ago, quarries were hewn by the Nile.
